Thinking About Reading

The past few days I have been snatching every morsel of time to read for my book club tonight. I gave it my all, but the bottom line is I should have started the book a little sooner. It wasn’t a big deal to have not finished this month’s nonfiction selection, Summer in a Glass, but I will surely complete it before returning it to the library.  The conversation was lively and invited everyone to contribute thoughts. We learned and wondered. Many readers have already visited websites for additional information and some will continue to pursue lingering questions.
I have also been perusing some of my favorite professional books on reading as I plan for upcoming mini-lessons. That being said, I have been thinking about the strategies I use most often as a reader.
·      I reread to clear up confusions
·      I reread to savor favorite parts
·      I jot words and phrases to remember
·      I ask questions
·      I create mental images
·      I look back when I forget important details
·      I reread when I dose off…
To be continued…

  2. Thanks for the tips. I really don't enjoy reading PD literature during school time.

  3. Yeah -- these are good point to make about how we read, and how we articulate our reading strategies, too.
    Good luck

  4. I like your list of your own reading strategies! It takes a lot of thinking to stop and notice what you are actually doing as you read! Your students will really benefit from your observations.
